BITMOTECO modules

This document serves as an overview of the BITMOTECO modules technology.

Definition

The BITMOTECOsystem is outstanding for its high flexibility and expandability. The System can be functionally expanded by installing additional software: modules. The scope of a module can range from a small additional function to a complex multi-component application. modules enable users to adapt the BITMOTECOsystem to their own needs by installing the appropriate modules for their application.

From a technical point of view, modules are a collection/ bundle of one or more independent containers which communicate via clearly defined interfaces and have an additional resource storage.

We enable our partners and customers to develop and build their own modules for use on the BITMOTECOsystem by providing them with a Software Development Kit (SDK) and the necessary documentation.

Bitmotec already offers a wide range of modules that are are carefully maintained and regularly updated. In addition, there is the option to integrate your own modules, either through your own custom development or through the use of third party services. This flexible and open customization option opens up the scope for tailor-made solutions and makes it possible for you to use the very best for your individual needs.

Benefits

BITMOTECO modules provide multiple benefits compared to just using single containers:

  • Modules are delivered as ready-made packages and come with all necessary dependencies. The customer can install and update the Modules without the need for an internet connection with a single file. This even allows the use in IT-infrastructures with a demilitarized zone (DMZ) and high security requirements.

  • Single file based: Offline update and installation as well as distribution by packing all container-images and resources into one file
  • Integrated license information storage (OSS licenses attributions)

  • User Interface: Integrated storage for multimedia and information text which get automatically presented to the customer in the BITMOTECO GUI like a "Shop-View"

Technology

Containers

A container is a standard unit of software that aggregates code with all its dependencies such as libraries, utilities and data in an securely encapsulated image file. This enables the applications to run quickly and reliably on one computing environment and easily on another system. Therefore, containers can be compared to a lightweight virtualization. A significant advantage of the containers is their good scalability. If additional instances of an application are required, new containers can simply be started, and after stopping them, they can be removed from the system.

Most of the software of the BITMOTECO Platform is capsuled into containers. This enables high security, maintainability, scalability and flexibility.

Network separation and permissions

All modules use encapsulated containers for their data processing. Because our product enforces a high security and abstraction level (virtual) network connections are the only enabled way to communicate between those containers. In the default environment each container can only communicate with other containers of the same module and the host system.

Host communication

In our system design, we carefully control how containers interact with the host system to maintain security and isolation. Containers are restricted to communicating solely with specific components directly integrated into the operating system, known as "managers". These managers act as gateways, regulating secure access to system functions. See the managers documentation for more details.

Addons/ Plugins

The functionality of some modules can be extended by addons. The type of addons depends strongly on the individual module and can not be generalized here. The available addons for the respective modules are listed and explained on the subpages of each module.
