BITMOTECO Platform - Software
Introduction
The BITMOTECO Platform is designed with industrial applications in mind, built from a suite of versatile components that create a powerful foundation for your technology needs. It offers seamless deployment as a virtual machine (VM) on a server, ensuring efficient central management and easy integration into your existing infrastructure. For enhanced flexibility, our platform can also convert various industrial computers into decentralized edge devices, supporting a wide range of operational scenarios. In the following sections, we look at the system architecture and how the components work together. Learn how our platform is designed to handle the complexity of industrial environments and drive efficiency and innovation in your operations.
Platform architecture
The following image shows the software architecture of the BITMOTECO Platform:

BITMOTECO Platform software architecture
The BITMOTECO Platform is composed of the BITMOTECO Core OS and various BITMOTECO modules (blue). The BITMOTECO Core OS is an aggregation of the basic operating system (yellow), multiple managers (green) and the container runtime stack (red)
See the following chapters where the software components are explained individually.
Data routing
Some examples of data routing within the BITMOTECO Platform, showing the different modules/containers the data passes through, can be found at data routing examples.
Software components
This chapter presents the individual software components which are involved in creating the BITMOTECO Platform.
Operating system - BITMOTECO Core OS
The BITMOTECO Core OS is a robust and versatile industrial Linux distribution designed for stability and security, reproducibility, and efficient resource utilization. The architectural design of the BITMOTECO Core OS is deeply integrated with the Docker container runtime stack. It emphasizes a container-first approach, mandating that all user applications, or BITMOTECO modules, must be executed within Docker containers. This containerisation principle offers a number of benefits, including software isolation, independent component updates and per-module access management. Managers act as intermediaries between containers and the operating system. They provide secure interfaces that allow communication between these components, ensuring that software inside containers is isolated and cannot directly alter or access system-level functions.

Modules
With modules the functions of the BITMOTECO Platform can be extended. This ranges from data connectors, visualization solutions or AI applications. Modules are pre-configured aggregations of one or more containers that address and solve specific tasks.
BITMOTECO modules can be easily installed using a single ".bmod"-file which contains all the necessary files to run out of the box without any need for an internet connection.
See the modules documentation for more details.

SDK - Software Development Kit
We provide a Software Development Kit (SDK) for the BITMOTECO Platform. It enables developers to build their own BITMOTECO Modules for usage with the BITMOTECO Platform.
The BITMOTECO Module SDK is used to create a .bmod file, which contains a module.
The build instruction can be found in the SDK documentation.

Open Source Software Licenses
The platform contains various Open Source Software (OSS) components. We provide detailed OSS information for every component in the BITMOTECO Platform GUI in the "OSS Licenses" section.
